Five things, and the jar lasts

First burn
Let it go until the melt pool reaches the edge of the glass. Usually two to three hours. A candle remembers its first burn, and a short one tunnels every burn after it.

Trim the wick
A quarter inch before every light. An untrimmed wick mushrooms, smokes and throws soot on the glass.

Four hours, max
Past four hours the vessel gets hot, the wick starts to lean and the fragrance burns off faster than it throws. Put it out and relight later.

Last half inch
Stop there. Below half an inch the glass is taking most of the heat. Wash the jar with hot water and keep it.

Where it sits
Away from draughts, vents and open windows. Moving air pulls the flame sideways and burns one side of the wax down.
Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from children, pets and anything that can catch. Burn on a heat-safe surface.
